Nicole:
0:00
Well, hello there.
Nicole:
0:13
My name is Nicole and this is the Buddhified podcast, episode one. Before we dive in, I want to send out a big Thank You to all of you who've encouraged me to get this podcast off the ground and on air. It's been a tremendous work in progress and a true labor of love. Thank you so much for making the time to listen.
Nicole:
0:37
Now let's dive into mindfulness and my manifesto.
Nicole:
0:55
For episode one, I want to dive into what is mindfulness, and why did I even start this podcast? So, what is mindfulness? Well, for me, mindfulness starts with awareness. Awareness for the world around us, the here and now, but also awareness for ourselves, our thoughts, our feelings and needs.
Nicole:
1:23
Speaking of thoughts, studies show that 90% of our thoughts are recycled material. You know how I'm crazy about the environment, but this is different. We live inside our heads. And that means we live in the past or in the future. We live in negative memories. We live in past situations we're constantly trying to decipher. We live in conversations that we try to stir into a different direction. "Why didn't I say what I actually felt?" "Why is she looking at me like that?" And my personal favorite: "What if ?"
Nicole:
2:12
Mindfulness is not a new phenomenon, though it seems a bit hip right this decade. Mindfulness is all around us and I love that. I hope it's going to stay forever and I hope it grows into a movement that spans the globe.
Nicole:
2:21
If you ever read Alice in Wonderland ( I love this book. If you haven't read it yet, read it.): Published in 1862 and filled with wisdom cover to cover, one of the quotes I love inside that book goes like this: "The rule is jam tomorrow and jam yesterday, but never jam today." It's a good reminder that we usually live either in the past or the future, but we could be so, so happy living in the here and now and seeing the beauty that surrounds us.
Nicole:
3:02
When we relive the past or worry about the future, we often do so in scenarios that never came or will come to pass. We interpret others' thoughts, we fear their judgment, and we let that fear keep us from living our best life, our happiest life.
Nicole:
3:18
What we don't realize is that everyone we feel is watching us, judging us, is really caught up in their own lifetime movie.
Nicole:
3:33
We're just a blip on their radar coming into existence as our actions, our words touch their lives, and blinking out as soon as our value loses its context to their path and journey.
Nicole:
3:45
Interesting, don't you think? I think that realization is both relevant and so, so, so inspiring, for life and for business. It's why the golden rule of writing for marketing and branding is to always set your message and raison d'etre in context to your readers' emotional goggles, their goals, their fears, their roadblocks, and their lifetime movie.
Nicole:
4:17
But mindfulness means more than stepping off your thought carousel and into the here and now.
Nicole:
4:30
It means indulging yourself and others. It means acceptance and esteem for all living things, starting with yourself. It means awareness for your feelings, for your musings, for your tendency to worry about the future. Embrace them all. Bless and release. Actually, bless and release has been crossing my path as a lesson this year. And it's one I invite you to mull over a little bit.
Nicole:
5:11
Sometimes letting a thought or feeling be what it is without picking it apart or pinning it as negative can help diffuse your inner turmoil. It can help free you for all the great things in your life. You know, sharpening your eye and letting you see the beauty that surrounds you, the love that's around you.
Nicole:
5:38
Mindfulness teaches us awareness for our thoughts, to use them for straitening out problem - because that's our thoughts' raison d'etre.
Nicole:
5:46
Mindfulness teaches us to control our brain instead of it controlling us, so we can live a life in kindness and joy. So we can focus on our goals and dreams. Go all-in on them. But mindfulness also teaches us to consciously step into a daydream or mull over a philosophical issue, to practice friendly ignorance towards the sorrows you can't change today or can't change at all - and come back to ourselves. That way, we can tap into our power and channel it towards the things we CAN change, the things we CAN influence.
Nicole:
6:32
For me, mindfulness also means practiced self acceptance, practiced self care and self love. And as entrepreneurs and you know, most of us are solo entrepreneurs and that means we are our only or best asset in business practice, self care and self love has everything to do with having a business mindset. Mindfulness is meditating. It's also practiced awareness for the here and now. Mindfulness teaches us acknowledgement and awareness for ourselves, our gifts and talents, our needs and our dreams. As busy entrepreneurs we tend to rush from one item on our to do list to the next, forgetting the blessings in our lives. Welcome to the hamster wheel. I've been there, I've done it all. I've bought the shirt and couple of trinkets. Believe me.
Nicole:
7:46
Mindfulness can help us show up at our best and focus on that next task at hand. Letting go of the worry for the whole of our path, and for the many things we may not get to today. Instead, we take that next best step and then, breathe out.
Nicole:
8:07
In a world that urges us to strive for fame and fortune, gadgets and trinkets, mindfulness teaches us to decelerate, to find joy for this moment in time and to look at the world and our place in it with love, and empathy - always, always starting with ourselves.
Nicole:
8:35
Awareness for the here and now opens the door to self care, acknowledging our own thoughts, feelings, needs - it lets us act more mindful towards others. Instead of letting frustration rule us into aggression, we learn to listen, to take a step back, to meet each other with kindness and generosity and consideration. All of that is directly connected to how we show up for ourselves as entrepreneurs, how we show up for our purpose and our business.
Nicole:
9:12
For your first steps towards more mindfulness and self care or a little refresher, I created a PDF with five short and sweet exercises for you. Download them, print them out, make them your own. Send me a picture. I would love to see how you made it work for you. You can download all of that goodness if you go to Buddhified dot com forward slash 1.
Nicole:
9:45
My own journey into mindfulness felt like a lot of puzzle pieces falling into place seemingly at random, seemingly without my doing, and absolutely in the background.
Nicole:
10:02
Looking back, of course the moments I received these blessings stand out like beacons, like big, flashy sign posts that kept pointing towards where I needed to go to create positive change for myself and for the world around me.
Nicole:
10:16
Stepping into your truth and becoming that seeker of goodness will not mean the end of entrepreneur frustration, the end of anxiety or overwhelm. I had to learn that, too. But it will mean that you learn how to come back to yourself, how to cope with the learns in life and how to celebrate the wins. You'll also learn that you're not alone. We're are all in this together.
Nicole:
10:54
So let's look at the spark of a Buddhified life and business, and why even started this podcast. Sometimes I feel like the broken record of "live your best life, grow your business towards sustainability, dream bigger, you are worth it," and right back to "live your best life". And then just sometimes I hear you think, "well, life isn't just perfect as that" - and you know, that's okay. You're right. Life isn't perfect. Actually, how boring would a perfect life be - since we're being honest here. Life is beautiful though. Part of that beauty, I feel, ishow it's up to you to create your happiest, most fulfilled existence.
Nicole:
11:52
It's up to you to step into purpose. It's up to you to be yourself. Unappreciated, unedited, and unapologetically you.
Nicole:
12:05
It's up to you to define your brush stroke in the big picture. So get out the crayons because this is when I ask you, or invite you to ask yourself:
Nicole:
12:15
What color are you?
Nicole:
12:18
How do you impact the lives you touch?
Nicole:
12:23
How can you make a difference and create positive change?
Nicole:
12:29
To set it all into context for the busy entrepreneur, it's up to you to claim your seat at whatever table you choose to be part of. A choice that sparks your deep dive of course, into finding the overlap between your purpose and whatever the world needs from you.
Nicole:
12:56
Then you move into strategizing with ethics and integrity from a place of love, and finally learning to communicate your value. In a smart, authentic way, making a tangible for the people who need exactly what you have to give.
Nicole:
13:10
Are you still with me or have I put you to sleep? I hope not.
Nicole:
13:17
I know we went from mindfulness to business mindset in a Jiffy - and we started out kind of thinking that mindfulness is supposed to be, I don't know, relaxing.
Nicole:
13:29
Bear with me for this one. It's an amazing time to be an entrepreneur. If you have the skill, or a prepared to acquire it, if you have the determination, if you have the cojones, you can change your life forever.
Nicole:
13:53
Now, I don't want to go all weird on you, but here it is. I believe in a life before death and I want to invite you to make a conscious choice to tap into your powers and create positive change for yourself and those around you. So, answer the following questions with yes, put your answers on a post-it note that you pin up your office wall.
Nicole:
14:29
Write them down is what I'm saying. That's what pause and rewind are for. Here they come.
Nicole:
14:34
Number one, do you believe in your purpose and in growing it into a gift for those who need exactly what you have to offer?
Nicole:
14:47
Number two, are you worth the effort it takes to create your happiest life?
Nicole:
14:52
Number three, are you ready to go from inspiration to implementation, to show up for yourself, your purpose and your business, consistently?
Nicole:
15:06
Say yes to yourself, shout it out loud, write it down in capital letters so you'll believe it and you'll strive towards it. I know you've got it in you. And I am right here, believing in you, rooting for you, cheering you on.
Nicole:
15:25
And I hear you when you say that all of that sounds like, ah, some hard work, but I promise you, when you live with a clear outcome in mind, when you serve from a place of empathy and love, --- well, it'll still be hard work to get where you're going. You want to grow into yourself and some parts are going to be tough.
Nicole:
15:55
But you can pardon my French and moan about it. Or you can get excited for the experience, excited for your journey and how it will impact others and how they will impact you. Get excited for the pebbles and the roadblocks and every little thing that, in time, is going to grow into your very own mosaic of wins and learns and adventures.
Nicole:
16:23
Think about the adventures that are waiting for you, the places you'll get to see, the people you'll get to meet.
Nicole:
16:34
If you're like me, you'll also think about all the mugs of coffee you'll enjoy between here and now, and where and who you will be.
Nicole:
16:41
Manifesto: I believe that entrepreneurship, together with equality and education and environmental awareness, will save the world. At the very least, I believe it will significantly add to our own longevity. Every one of us has it in them to add to the equation and create positive change. For me, that means not only sharing what I learned about building a Buddhified business, it also means I get to help authors, entrepreneurs, and everyday people like me to tell their story and with that story, inspire others - to educate, elevate, and empower and spread the good word.
Nicole:
17:34
I've been so, so, so blessed with amazing people, with access to an abundance of resources and I want to pay that forward. That, of course, led me here, today, with you.
Nicole:
17:49
So welcome to the Buddhified podcast. This is where amazing guests and I talk about all things mindfulness. We talk about living your truth and building an all around nourishing business or rather, an all-around nourishing existence. We laugh a lot. I mean my first question is always, how do you drink your coffee in the morning so you KNOW we're off to a great start. But we also dive mad deep.
Nicole:
18:29
We dive into the rhyme and reason, the sense and sensibility, the utter madness of a life that's deeper than the norm. Expect insights and inspiration. But most of all, we want to give you tangible advice you can put into action right away.
Nicole:
18:49
If this is the first time we ever crossed paths, you might ask yourself, is this podcast for me? So let's see. You want to live a life of purpose, but right now what drives you is mostly caffeine and a need to make money. You're ready to change lanes and taste abundance and joy and freedom, but from ethical branding to marketing yourself, from actually defining your purpose to setting up shop in the land of sustainable bottom lines, you have questions, so many questions. And that's why you're here.
Nicole:
19:45
I want to be that voice, tiny but persistent, nagging almost, that inspires you and encourages you to acknowledge your purpose and follow your journey towards a life lived to the fullest.
Nicole:
19:58
And here's the part I love best: you can join the conversation, live. Every week, we record The Buddhified Podcast with a live stream, You can head on over to buddhified dot com forward slash live to claim your seat and join me in the chat with your questions, your take on things, your stories.
Nicole:
20:24
Also, let's socialize: Find me on your favorite platform with the hashtag #buddhified. I'd love to connect, so please reach out, send me a DM, get in touch. I'd love to get to know you.
Nicole:
20:43
And that's it for today. Episode 1 all done. Well, almost. Let me close with one of my many, many quotes turned into mantras.
Nicole:
20:59
To love and win is the best thing. To love and lose, the next best. William Thackeray said that.
Nicole:
21:07
Thank you for tuning in. Thank you for believing that we all have the power to create positive change.
Nicole:
21:18
Until we meet again. May the space between where you are now and where you want to be inspire you.
Nicole:
21:24
Namaste.
